Reflections
Thank you for your submission to Reflections. We're pleased to include your story in the zine.
The relationship between an author and an editor is a unique one which consists of give and take on both sides. Before we get started, and since there have been some questions/concerns given the proliferation of fiction on the Internet, the following are our "rules" for publication. Please look them over and either sign and return the bottom of this form, or copy the form into an e-mail message, insert your name and information in the appropriate blanks, and send it to jdevore@speakeasy.net
1. Stories remain the property of the author. However, the editor and publisher request that you not submit your story anywhere else, including posting it on the Internet, for one year following publication, or until the zine is sold out, whichever is shorter.
2. Your story WILL be edited for content and construction. If you do not want your story edited, please withdraw your story. We are always willing to work with you on changes or suggestions, and will gladly listen to your reasoning if you disagree with something we've suggested. Final editorial decisions rest with the author. However, final publishing decisions rest with the editor (i.e. if you don't like our changes, you're well within your rights not to make them. However, we're then within our rights not to publish the story). We've yet to have this be an issuemost editorial decisions can be compromised on.
3. The process
Your initial submission was most likely in hard copy, and this will be the copy we'll begin editing from. You should be receiving this first edit back within a few weeks. You are asked to make the changes on your original computer file (the one you printed out and sent to us), then send the revised version to us electronically where possible (either via diskette or via e-mail attachment). Please send your document in the word processor of your choice (the editors use WordPerfect, but can read Word and most other Word Processors. If in doubt, save it as a RTF (rich text) document). Please allow one inch margins all the way around and format the text single-spaced with a tab at the head of each paragraph and no space between paragraphs. Please keep your text as plain as possible, as special formatting will need to be stripped out before final formatting for the zine (if you have bolds or italics you want, of course, leave those in). This will then become your working copy. E-mail your copy to jdevore@speakeasy.net. We can read standard attachments.
Depending on the story, you may go through two or three separate edits, or more. After the first one, these will all take place electronically, where possible. You are asked to make the changes and send the revised copy to us again electronically. The final hard copy you receive (about 6 weeks before publication) will be a galley proof. It will be your responsibility to read through this galley carefully for any typos, missing or misspelled words, formatting glitches, etc. Either correct the galley and send it back to us, or e-mail us with the corrections.
4. One of the reasons we write is for feedbackto hear what others have to say about our efforts. To this end, we've found it useful to include each author's e-mail address with each story, so that readers can contact the authors directly. Please let us know if you'd like your e-mail address included with your story, and provide us with the address you'd like to use.
7. For your efforts, you will receive a complementary copy of the zine. Please make sure we have your correct mailing address so we can get you your copy in a timely manner. We'll also let you know the price of the zine so you can tell all your friends.
7. If you need to contact us, our e-mail addresses are jdevore@speakeasy.net and jpkraft@yahoo.com. All hard-copy correspondence should be sent to Chicago Station, c/o PO Box 480394, Niles, IL 60714-0394.
Thanks for participating in Reflections. We're looking forward to creating a terrific zine together.
